To simplify and digitize tax and administrative processes.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Here\u2019s what you need to know &#8211; how it works, who gets one, and how to find yours.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why the Business ID matters<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The W-IdNr. is like the personal tax ID, but for businesses and self-employed individuals. It ensures you can be clearly identified in tax and administrative systems, no matter what changes &#8211; whether you move, change your name, or restructure your business. And the best part? It stays with you for your entire \u201cbusiness life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who gets a Business ID?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The W-IdNr. is for&nbsp;<em>anyone<\/em>&nbsp;who\u2019s economically active. That includes not only traditional companies and freelancers but also:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Nonprofits and associations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Public organizations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Anyone offering goods or services for a fee, even cultural, sports, or social institutions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re doing business in any way, chances are, you\u2019ll get a W-IdNr.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u27a1\ufe0f <a href=\"https:\/\/interstellar.accountable.de\/en\/blog\/freelancing-in-germany-heres-what-you-need-to-know-about-tax-numbers\/\">Do you know the different tax numbers in Germany<\/a>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How it makes things easier<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Over time, this ID will reduce red tape and allow government offices to share information more efficiently. Thanks to the \u201conce-only principle,\u201d you\u2019ll only need to provide your details once, they\u2019ll be reused automatically where needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It doesn\u2019t replace your existing tax numbers (like your personal tax ID or your regular tax number), but it complements them. It\u2019s based on \u00a7 139c of the German Fiscal Code.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What the number looks like<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Your W-IdNr. comes in two parts:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A&nbsp;<strong>base number<\/strong>&nbsp;that starts with \u201cDE\u201d followed by nine digits (e.g.,&nbsp;<strong>DE123456789<\/strong>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An&nbsp;<strong>activity code<\/strong>&nbsp;that reflects a specific business activity. This starts with \u201c-00001\u201d and increases with each additional business you operate (e.g.,&nbsp;<strong>DE123456789-00002<\/strong>&nbsp;for your second business)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udca1&nbsp;<em>Important: The number doesn\u2019t contain any personal or business data, it\u2019s just an identifier.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When you\u2019ll get your number<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You don\u2019t need to apply for the W-IdNr. &#8211; it\u2019s issued automatically by Germany\u2019s Federal Central Tax Office (BZSt). The rollout is happening in three phases:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Phase 1 (since November 2024):<\/strong><br>Businesses that charge VAT or qualify as small businesses under \u00a7 19 UStG get their W-IdNr.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Phase 2 (starting Q3 2025):<\/strong><br>Everyone else who\u2019s economically active will receive their number.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Phase 3 (from 2026):<\/strong><br>If you run more than one business activity, each one will get its own activity code.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Examples:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Base ID:&nbsp;<code>DE123456789<\/code><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>First business:&nbsp;<code>DE123456789-00001<\/code><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Second business (from 2026):\u00a0<code>DE123456789-00002<\/code><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Examples of the Economic Identification Number:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><thead><tr><th>Description<\/th><th>Economic Identification Number<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>Your base number<\/td><td>DE123456789<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>For your first activity<\/td><td>DE123456789-00001<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>For a second activity starting in 2026<\/td><td>DE123456789-00002<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How you\u2019ll be notified<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You don\u2019t need to do anything to get your number. Notification will happen in one of two ways:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1.&nbsp;<strong>You already have a VAT ID (USt-IdNr.)?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your existing VAT ID becomes your Business ID automatically.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No personal notice will be sent to you\u2014it\u2019s the same number.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As of&nbsp;<strong>December 3, 2024<\/strong>, you can start using your VAT ID as your W-IdNr.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This change will be publicly announced in the Federal Tax Gazette and on the BZSt website.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2.&nbsp;<strong>You don\u2019t have a VAT ID?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You\u2019ll receive your W-IdNr. through your&nbsp;<strong>ELSTER account<\/strong>&nbsp;(Germany\u2019s official tax portal).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make sure you\u2019ve agreed to receive notifications via ELSTER.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you have a tax representative, they\u2019ll receive the number on your behalf.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udca1&nbsp;<em>Important: You need an ELSTER account and must agree to receive messages there. The number won\u2019t be sent by email or phone for privacy reasons.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u27a1\ufe0f <a href=\"https:\/\/interstellar.accountable.de\/en\/blog\/understanding-the-finanzamt-the-steuernummer-letter\/\">Letters from the Finanzamt explained!<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u27a1\ufe0f Germany\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/interstellar.accountable.de\/en\/blog\/bzst-and-finanzamt\/\">Federal Central Tax Office or Finanzamt &#8211; what&#8217;s the difference?<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">FAQs: Business ID Number<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Do I need to apply for the W-IdNr.?<\/strong><br>No. It\u2019s assigned automatically by the tax authorities when needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Who exactly gets a W-IdNr.?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you have a VAT ID before&nbsp;<strong>September 30, 2024<\/strong>, that becomes your W-IdNr.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you don\u2019t have a VAT ID but use ELSTER, you\u2019ll get your number there.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If neither applies, you\u2019ll get your number once the legal and technical setup is in place.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Where can I find my W-IdNr.?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you have a VAT ID, that&nbsp;<em>is<\/em>&nbsp;your W-IdNr.\u2014you\u2019ll find it in your tax documents.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If not, log into your ELSTER account after you\u2019re notified.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Is the W-IdNr. the same as the VAT ID?<\/strong><br>Almost. They look the same (both start with \u201cDE\u201d and have nine digits). If you already have a VAT ID, it\u2019s reused as your W-IdNr.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But they serve different purposes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The&nbsp;<strong>VAT ID<\/strong>&nbsp;is used mainly for VAT-related activities, especially within the EU.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The&nbsp;<strong>Business ID<\/strong>&nbsp;is a broader tool, helping separate business from personal tax matters. It\u2019s part of a larger push to digitize and streamline administration.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if you don\u2019t have a VAT ID, you\u2019ll still get a W-IdNr. eventually\u2014same format, different function.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re a freelancer, small business, nonprofit, or any kind of service provider, this number is your new official identifier in the world of taxes and government systems.
